I have a 1946 Oliver 70 with a 12 volt setup. I put a new battery in, replaced all the frayed wiring and started it up. I ran it around the barn a few times and then it just died.....When I tried to spin the starter again, the battery was nearly dead. It has the 12 volt generator with an external voltage regulator. Where and what should I check to see that I am actually getting a charge. I have read on other posts that at a low engine speed, the generator won't charge the battery. Just want to be able to troubleshoot the problem. Thanks for any help.

First make sure that you have polarity of battery correct; if you have an alternator (what some folks call an "AC generator") and you connected the battery up w/ reverse polarity, you will need to buy a new alternator because you will have already burned out the diodes in the rectifier bridge. "Diodes" are what allow current to pass only one way, thus converting (rectifying) AC current generated by the "alternator" into DC current to be used by the vehicle. What you seem to be seeking is merely a quick way to tell if your charging system is charging your battery. No sweat! Get yourself one of those nice (and inexpensive) little digital multimeters (DMM) at Radio Shack. Before starting your engine, check the battery voltage by using DC setting on meter, red prod to battery POS post, black prod to battery NEG post. Note meter reading (a fully charged 12-volt battery will read 12.66 volts and only a DMM is capable of reading those digits after the decimal point; a reading of only 12.00 volts is a DEAD battery). Then start engine and take a reading again; meter should now read substantially higher (somewhere around 14 volts), with engine still running, turn lights on and check reading again; the reading should drop below the high reading, but not down to the engine-off reading. Also, don't forget that a parasitic drain on the battery (a switch that is not completely turning off, etc) or a short somewhere in the wiring will also quickly run down a battery. But by using the quick & easy method above, you can right away determine whether your charging system is charging or not. Also, in all electrical systems, the first place to start looking is at the grounds to make sure they are clean & tight.

First thing is check the polarity of the new battery you put in.If a generator it is pos.+ to ground and if an alternator its neg or- to ground.

momentarily short betwween the arm and bat terminals on voltage regulator. if this does'nt help, try grounding the fld terminal. next short across the posts on the amp gage. it is good to have a volt gage so you can tell if it is putting volts into the battery. it should be in the 14 volt range. please excuse the rest of this! tge arm and bar terminals on voltage regulator. if this doesnot help, try grounding the fld. next jump across the terminals of the amp gage.
