Oliver Super 77 hydraulic pump

Hi everyone , My uncle has a "Super 77" which is loosing hydraulic oil. It is leaking into the transmission case. He doesn't have a computor , so I'm posting this question for him. He would like your opinions of which way he should install the pump seals. Both the same way. Or one facing one way and one facing the other way.

Put the seals in back to back and a bit of white
assembly lube in the middle. The seals are very
narrow and can be damaged.Check the shaft & brgs.
This is important,you can`t hold seals with
loose brgs. The seals in Oliver hyd. pump or most gear pumps are not under hyd. pressure.
They are vented back to the suction or inlet
side of pump.

I just went through the hydraulic pump on my 880. I had the same problem. The hydraulics worked but I was constantly puting in fluid and losing it to the rear end. I also had problems with the fluid foaming up and overflowing out the dipstick when I ran cylinders back down. I adjusted the restrictor valve on the return for days trying to eliminate the problem but never did. When I rebuilt my pump someone had replaced the seals before and put them in the same way. I put the new ones in opposite like the book says. Now my problem seams to be gone. I attribute this to the seals both being the same way and sucking air in. In the troubleshooting section of the service manual it said my foaming problem could have been from bad seals allowing air to be sucked in. I would recommend from this following the manual, put them in opposite.

According to the Oliver Service Manual the two seals are placed back to back, that is in opposite directions. I would assume to prevent air from getting and oil from getting out.

I know the book, says to install them opposing each other, but, put both the same direction. Do this and chances are you won't have to work on them again for a long long time. I think other old Oliver mechanics will tell you the same thing.

The seals should be put in opposite of each other. The inside seals lip faces in, sealing hydrolic oil in, and the out side seal face out sealing the transmission oil from getting in the pump. The reason for th outside seal is for high speeds when the oil splash is at its greatest. Depending on how much you use the tractor either way will work, but this is the correct way.

Must be quite a splash as tranny at atmospheric and hydraulic system at 1250 psi !!!!

You really think that lip seal is holdig 1250p.s.i.?? If you think a lip seal can do this, you shount be answering questions.
