I am about to become an Oliver 70 owner, and I have a couple questions. We believe the serial number says it is a 1938 (222213). My question is why does the serial index give two sets of non consecutive serial numbers for 37, and 38 ? This tractor is equipped with 36 inch rubber, and cast iron wheels. Was that one of the wheel options offered by the factory, or was that another method of converting from steel ? Thank you

I looked in my parts book and the tire could have been 11.5-36. This was an option on the row crop tractor. Look and see if on the cast wheel you can find a # B705E, that is Oliver's part #. As for the change in serial #'s that may be when the Hart-Parr was droped from the tractor and the new styling took place.

Thanks Larry, I was hoping someone would pull out their parts book for me. I will definatly need to get one soon, as more questions arise. My guess is that the serial numbering had something to do with either the styling or the switch from 5 to 3 gears. I thought by 1938 the unstyled version was gone from the assembly line. Maybe not. This tractor by the way is a styled row crop. Anyone else have any comments about the serial number sequencing ? Thanks

Esev, the official Oliver Corporation Service Manual for the Oliver "70" tractor states that the change from the 5-gear engine to the 3-gear engine was made at S/N 223151 for the Row Crop and 303507 for the Standard and Orchard. It also gives only the following tire sizes for the Row Crop "70" (NOT the Oliver Hart-Parr Row Crop 70): 11-38 rear, 5.50-16 front; however, it immediately then states "refer to the "70" Part List for rear wheel equipment available for Oliver "70" tractors." The serial numbers for the Row Crop models all begin with the digit 2; the Standard and Orchard models all begin with the digit 3; and the Industrial models all begin with the digit 4. By your serial number it appears that you have a 1938 Row Crop.

I believe the two sets of different numbers for 1937 are because of the styling change, but not sure. Probably Sherry Schaefer at Oliver Information can tell you.
