I've never owned a oliver and don't know much about them.I have ran a MM G1000 and they seem to be simular to the olivers.Anyway here is my question what are the horse power ratings for a 1650 & a 1850? What,if any weak points do they have?I am looking for a low cost tractor to run a 6 foot big round baler.The asking price for the 1850 is $5400 the 1650 $3000.I have a small farm going now but am just starting out.I need something reliable but economics rule out a new tractor.I used the nieghbors 1466 IH to bale with last year but that was serios over kill.I have a 60 horse and a 40 horse JD tractors all ready.the old 720 will pull the baler but it's a job for it and my ground is hilly.I don't like to take it over the big hills with a full bale.I bale about 200 bales a year no row crop just cattle.Are theese old olivers the same work horses the MM's were?What are the major things to look for on the two tractors? The 1850 is diesel the 1650 is LP.Filling the LP tractor off of my tank here at the house doesn't bother me as my hay ground is close to the house.Thanks for your help. Ken

Thank you for your responses.I'm going over the first of the week and look the tractor over really close.The 1850 is sitting on a sales lot maybe I can bring them down a little on the price.

With out a doubt, go with the 1850, as long as the diesel engine is a Perkins. The 1850 is an excellent tractor to bale with. I have 3 1850 diesels, and I wouldn't trade any of them. If you can, try to get the guy to take less for the 1850; somewhere between $4500-$5000. If he won't, buy it anyway. Another thing I noticed is that every part that I wanted is still available from Oliver (Agco), and there are a lot of used parts out there too. Just let us know how you like it when you do buy it!!

The 1650 is 68 hp.the 1850 is 92 hp.The 1850 has the perkins engine and lots more weight.With wide tires and lots of fluid you can get the 1650 to where it might seem ok on gentle slopes.I would think the 1850 is best.The drawbar and hitch is allso heavyer and I have had problems with the 1650 hitch breaking loose.

Larry,

I agree with you on this. I have a 1655 and I think that is probably one of their few weak points. The drawbar support is kind of light built, otherwise a great tractor. For baling the really big bales on hilly ground, an 1850 would be a better choice, you would be pushing the 1650 to its limit.

I agree with him, go with the 1850. Both of the MM's and Oliver's are great tractors. I have an Oliver 1950-T and a MM G750. THey are great. Do you still have your MM. How much HP was it?

The G1000 was the nieghbors down the road,I worked for him for about 3 years.Not really sure about the HP of the old beast but it was a puller out in the field.It would walk all over the 4430 JD he had.He was sold out in 1984 when farmers around here where going under left and right.wish I'd had the money then to start my small operation,I'd bought that old tractor.Thank you for your advice on the 1850.
