88 diesel upgrade?

I see all the comments about putting the head with the larger valves or even just a bigger motor. But I guess what I'm asking is will someone really have to know their sh*t to be able to tell or will it be very noticeable. I pull in the antique class and theres alot of guys with beefed up motors but its very hard to tell. I just dont want sink the money into it and then get caught. I have a regular "88" which is 45 h.p. and I' like to be up around 65 h.p. Can anyone tell me some secrets? I did have some pump work done and I know how to play with the smoke screw.
