Hello Fellow Oliver Fans! I have a friend in The Black Hills of South Dakota that has recently purchased a 1955 super 55 Diesel, and has some questions! It has green wheels, he thinks that originally they were red? Second question is that it has an air filter that looks like something off of a much newer tractor, it comes up through the hood and has a 6" plastic canister like on a newer Farmall, were was there an air filter originally? Your reply is much appreciated!

: I also own an Oliver Super 55 Diesel built in 1955. We've done a lot of searching trying to figure out the proper paint colors and came to the realization that everyone has a different opinion of the original color scheme! A guy about a 2 miles away from me has an original (not repainted) Oliver Super 77. The original paint on the wheels is RED. The original paint on the center bar of the grill is also RED. In books I have seen both red and green. Quite often I find green wheels with red wheel weights.

: We are planning on sandblasting our wheels down to bare metal and checking the paint layers as we go. The last layer of paint we find is what we will try to reproduce. We are expecting the paint color to be red, but green would not suprise me either. My best guess (and I mean GUESS) is that the wheels should be red, simply because that is what I see most frequently on restored Oliver Super series tractors.

: As for the oil filter, it should be a vertical oil bath air filter hanging on the left side (exhaust pipe side) of the engine. They did not use plastic parts on them. If an optional unit was available, as described by another posting, it could be possible that is what you have. Most likely, the original oil bath filter was replaced because they are a pain in the butt, and they also rusted out on the bottom of the oil holding pan.

Thanks Paul for the info, I will pass it on. How do you like your new Oli? Where are you from, have you been able to try it out in cold weather? This buddy of mine put on the snow blade anticipating to use it this winter but thanks to El Nino winter has not shown up yet at his place!

I just bought a Super 55 diesel myself, also a 1955. Now, mine has green wheels and I have an Oliver book that shows green wheels. The book also has the Super 66 and Super 88 with green wheels. The same book does show a 1955 Super 99 gasoline with red wheels. Does this help any?

It is my understanding that the first Supers had green wheels but they changed back to red wheels in 1957. I painted my 1955 Super 55 wheels red not knowing any better.
