How can I tell the difference between a industrial and a regular 550.

The surest sign is that there are no hydraulics or three point hitch set up (there is a rather plain flat topped transmission cover), there is no PTO (a plate covers where it would exit the rear) and there is no PTO clutch engaging lever. Beware that there are vestigial mounting points where the three point hardware would connect, but it is bare bones compared to the regular hydraulic set up. The industrial had heavier front spindles and hubs which are hard to tell unless you had one to compare. Also, from what I know, the industrials came standard with power steering. Finally, if you can find any original paint, they were painted yellow from the factory.

Hope this helps.

Thank you. I wanted to know because I think I might have found one because it has original yellow paint and the heavy front hubs. But the tractor has 3pt hitch and hydraulics. I know for sure that it is an industrial, but I wanted to know if mine was an industrial because it has some yellow paint on the rear housing and has power steering.

The hubs I've seen have not been any heavier than the one in a regular 550. I know someone who bought one when it was new and and there is very little difference in it and mine and oter 550's I've seen, and there was no difference in the serial plates besides the serial numbers.

I have some old literature on the 550 industrial, and it seemed that one big diiference was that the front axle was not adjustable. However, I am sure that if back in 1960 the state of Illinois (or whatever) wanted to buy 50 of these tractors, they would add ANY option the customer wanted, including ANY color. After all, many of these type of tractors were used with sickle bars and those required a PTO (and maybe a three-point hitch).

There was also a tire size difference, IIRC, but many of the differences could be lost over time. Even the one-piece front axle that was a standard front axle for industrial was also avilable on the farm tractor as an option.

I have seen postings mentioning Super 55 industrials with ptos. I haven't seen one with a 3 point though. I also thought I have seen that the transmission has a different pinion gear, and it is reflected in the serial # or spec #. I would check with Sherry Schafer at the HPOCA page.
