I was looking at oliver tractor that is labeled on the side as 1655 but I,m suspecious that its a 1555 . Serial number is 233 437 490 which could be either by the first numbers but is 490 1655 or 1555 code The bottom part of the serial number plate has been carefully painted flat black leading me to wonder whats up?Thanks.

After work last night , I ran by my friend's house and took a quick look at his 1655 . In case you are interested my quick inspection turned up two more visual differences in the 1655 and the 1555: (1) on the right side of the engine from the driver's seat , the oil filter on the 1555 is a spin on type element that is horizonal when installed while on the 1655 the filter is a sock type (like on the 1855 ) that goes in a metal pot that hangs vertically to the engine ; (2) on the left side from the driver's seat , the diesel return lines on the 1655 have the Rossi (did I spell that right ?) rubber boots (again like the 1855) while the 1555 has return lines with screw in metal fittings . I disagree with Shep on one thing . Given the difference in horse power and the amount of work my friend's 1655 will do compared to my 1555 , I would say you have a sheep in wolf's clothing .

The wolf is uncovered! Its been confirmed that the tractor is a 1555. I was back at show yesterday and met up with a retired oliver dealer[aren,t they all?] His first statement "look at oil filter 1555 gas has horizonal filter 1655 veritcal,check engine lenghth and number" ,and before I had a chance to go several buildings over he was back and informed me "Thats no D.... 1655 and I told them so !!!!" This tractor is at Toronto farm show so will be seen by thousands and I didn,t want it misrepresented. Every year they have a show toy tractor and they try and get the same actual tractor but they missed this year !!! Thanks for all the imput.

Another possible way to tell difference between 1555 and 1655 is diesel fuel filter . My 1555 (from driver seat ) has primary filter on right side of engine ( a string type filter element inside a metal cylinder ) and secondary small can type replaceable filter element on left just below injection pump . A friend of mine has an 1655 which has only a glass box type filter on right hand side of engine from driver seat . Also 1555 has indirect injection on diesel engine like 1650 had (energy cells on right side of engine from driver seat ) while I think 1655 has direct injection . As always , Mr Star is right on gear oil filter : 1555 does not have one on left side under driver's platform while 1655 does . Sam

Not for sure but I belive the 1555 used a smaller real axle. If you can find one of either and measure than that might help determine which one it is.

Grant: 1550/1555 (and 770) used block part number 160 918A. I think that I remember that the 1650/1655 used 104 305AS. The 1550/1555 had a spur/sliding gear transmission, did not need a lube pump. 1650/1655 had the helical gear constant mesh gears with a lube pump. Lube pump transmissions had a filter on the left side of the trans housing. That should tell you what the transmission was.

What makes you think it is a 1555???? I "think" not 100% sure that the 1555 only had the hydra power transmission, and the 1655 had the over/under shift. I do not know about the serial numbers, BA Star could tell you about them.....

This tractor has hyra power ,15.5 X 38 tires can,t tell on spur vs helical trany its not available to drive. I am sure last 3 didgets can tell me but don,t know the codes and just don,t see them in archives. Its all painted up as 1655 but I,m just not convinced !

I would say your correct in thinking it is a 1555. If it has a hydra power, I dont think the 1655 offered a hydra power transmission. Tires sound like a 1555 as well, most 1655's ran 16.9x 34s not 38s Hmmmmm m you might have a wolf in sheeps clothing..... .....

Believe you're right on the hydra power (2 speed) on 1555, and "hydraul shift" (3 speed) on 1655. 1550 had straight cut gears, not sure about 1555. 1650 and 1655 had helical (much easier to shift, and a different "feel"- but unless you've used both, probably hard to describe the difference).
