Did you find a solution to the grinding problem? I have a 550 with the same problem. I replaced all the clutch parts, but it still grinds. When the engine is stopped, I can depress the clutch and the input shaft will turn freely, but when the engine is running, it doesn't completely stop. I have thought that it may be the center shaft (which drives the PTO and pump) which is dragging somehow on the outer shaft which drives the transmission.

Sounds like Clutch is dragging one way or another,.. Try adjusting clutch, if this does not work,.. You may have to take it apart and clean the cultch and parts and reassemble.

The dust gets into the pilot bearing/bushing, making the shaft drag, or may be seized pilot bearing, also it may have a broken spring in the pressure plate, or the clutch got heated and warped out of shape. Maybe linings are loose?

All things to look for. Sorry, but it involves at least disassembly of the clutch to see what is the cause if not just adjustments.

you need to set your clutch up. Sounds like you need to lengthen your clutch rod. Check and see how much free play you have on your paddle. It should be around 1 1/2 inches. That would be from were your peddle rests to were it starts to put pressure on your release bearing. Lengthen or shorten your linkage to give you that amount of free play. It should work unless your release bearing and or clutch is worn out. Good luck Bob
