We just recently bought an Oliver 880 Gas tractor. It had been outside for a while and we wanted to change oils and some other parts. No one in our area can tell us anything about the rearend oil. Looking for some help! Does the rear end, trasmission, and hydraulics all use the same oils and the same resevors. We found were to put the hydraulic oil in on the platform by the hydraulic controls, but can find nothing for the rearend/transmission but the plug on the right side about midway down the housing. If anyone could shed some light we would appreciate it. Our manual and people we know here are telling us several different things and we don't want to mess anything up internally. RB

Randy, you should find a cap, probably a vented one, on the very top of the hydraulic unit. This cap will be right beside the levers coming out of the top. I use Co-op HTB in all my old 88's and 77. The cap you have located on the platform is where you pour the grease into the transmission and final drive. The plug you have located on the rear end is the fill level. When grease runs out of that, both the transmission and final drives are full. Should use 80-90 gear grease in the rear end. I don't have an 880 but this is the deal on the 88's. I think the fill plugs and such are the same.

Thanks for the messages back. If I understand correctly there is some sort of baffle in the transmission/rearend so when you fill it, the oil fills one area then spills over to the next, then will run out of the plug on the right side when full?

That's the deal exactly. When you want to drain the rear end/transmission oil, you need to open two plugs, one under the transmission and the other under the final drive.

The hydraulic dip stick doubles as the fill for the hydraulics. The engine and transmission use the same oil, the fill plug is in front of the shifter. I would use 80W90 for the rear and transmission oil. Regular allpurpose hydraulic fluid should be ok. The manual calls for 10W30 motor oil for the rearend and trans then an additive, most people use 80W90. The pto has a seperate drain and fill also . The plug on the side is the full level for the trans and rearend.
