550 help

Just picked up 1964 550 (gas) help.

How do you check and add and drain lube in the steering box?
What type trans,hydraulic and differential lube should be used and is there another check plug other than the one at the rear of the differential?
I think I have 12v negative ground generator but I'm not sure how do I know if its negative or positve ground?

My 550 diesel is positive ground. Seems like it says so somewhere in the IT manual, too.

The steering drain is the lowest bolt on the left side.The owners manusls say to use gear oil but the service manuel says to use calcium grease.If you don't like leaks use the grease,Deere corn head grease works excelent.Just stick the pipe of your grease gun in the bolt hole and pump untill it shows at the upper hole.

The manual mentions:

"The first tractors built with the Saginaw gears are filled with 90 gear lubricant. Continue using gear lubricant until such time as the steering gear is disassembled and cleaned. Then refill with No. 1 multipurpose grease. Super 55 and 550 steering gears without the pipe plug on the front of the gear were originally filled with 90 gear lubricant. Wehen the change was made too using No.1 multi-purpose grease, the plug was added to the front of the gear housing to facilitate filling the unit."

I figure it is safe to use grease without taking the unit apart, but would recommend checking frequently to purge all the oil out.

Re Earth: If it got a battery on it, look to see which terminal is ground to the frame.

The steering box filler is on the right side and either a pipe plug or behind the rear upper bolt of the colum. Fill it to the in order to lube the upper bearing which is held in the colum flange. There is no drain on the box so you want clean it the front cross shaft will come out and water oil etc can be cleaned out. The shaft will slide back after just put a little grease on the O ring. It calls for 90 wt oil.[fill it to the top. typo]

i have a '63 550g and the fill for the sterring gear box is on the top of the box, just behind the battery, you my need to take off the dash to get to it. you use the same oil for trans and diff i believe i dont have my operator manual in friont of me but ill check tomorrow and let you know on the oils, and the only check plug is the one on the back the fill is right between your legs, when your sitting on it, on the tranmission housing. there are 3 drain plugs for the tran on the bottome of the houseing. if it is still original it is neg ground,
