Hi Mike, Im with you on the looks of a generator on old tractors. Im half was through restoring a 1940 Farmall "A" tractor and wanted to convert it over to 12 volts. I am going to buy the smallest 12 volt battery that can be had because the engine is only a 123cid and doesnt need a big monster to spin it over. I got a generator and regulator that was originally from a early to mid 60's Ford Falcon and spent a lot of time making a bracket to bolt it up. I took the generator apart, sanded it, primed it, and painted it the same time I painted the engine. From a short distance you can tell its a generator and most folks will think its a 6 volt set up, untill you look real close at the generator. Even then you dont know if its a 6 or 12 set up. The battery is hid inside the battery box and thats really the only give-a-way that its a 12 volt system. Install a alternator and there is no doubt that its been converted. The little Farmalls engine only spins at around 1540 RPM compared to the Fords 4000 plus RPM, and your right about it not charging as much at the lower RPM. I gave this some thought before I went to a 12 volt generator and came to the conclusion that I dont need that kind of high charging because of the lack of accesories on the tractor that was on the car. Hi and low beam head lights, brake and tail lights,dash lights, windshield wipers, turn signals, heater, radio, ignition system and the such. The only thing the little Farmall needs juice for is the starter and lights (Magneto fired) and I dont see that I will ever need the lights much either. Most all of these old tractors used a Delco-remy generator so if a person really wants the crowd to wonder if its a 6 or 12, then use a generator from a GM car or truck from 1956(?) to 1964 so that you will have a generator with the Delco-remy tag on it. How ever, the tag will most likely have a "12 volt" stamping on it. One more thing on car generators, make sure you match the regulator to the generator as they are not all made the same on the inside. Sorry for the long responce, I guess I just like generators.
