Thanks to Paul Stanley for his help over the past couple of weeks. Supposed to buy a 55 tomorrow. It has the original 6V system and has very few hours after a comprehensive rebuild. She acted like the battery was dead every time so I put a new battery (tested at 6.38V) in her and it will just barely turn her over - not even one full rotation. When you jump with a 12, she spins right over and starts right up. I ran her fairly hard for about half an hour and there were no problems. The engine can be turned by hand with a STRUGGLE. Much harder than my 550. Is it possible that the compression is way up there due to the overhaul, or am I buying trouble. Even after the half hour test ride, the 6V battery would not turn her over. Any suggestions appreciated!

Your starter is just weak. It needs a tune-up. Probably new bushings. Keep your tractor 6 volts. They start just fine with 6 volts. My 55 starts easy, all the time.

Vince, it could be just a poor contact. Clean the battery terminals (If they are the kind with the clamp on terminals, there could be corrosion in the wires themselves. If it is starting with a 12 volt jump, there isn't anything mechanically wrong. I really suspect bad wiring.

Does this tractor have lights? You can do a quick starter check with the lights on.

1. If the lights go out when you crank the starter, you have a bad connection from the battery to the starter.

2. If the lights dim quite a bit, and the starter cranks slowly-poorly charged battery or a worn out starter, meaning lose bearings, or a bent armature shaft. However, tight piston rings and bearings in the engine itself can put quite a load on, especially if it is cold out and the oil is thick.

It doesn't take much to take this starter out and have the commutator, brushes and field coils tested.

Most likely you have charging or starter problems. All the equipment can be checked if you have a good starter alt man around. Most likely my guess would be the starter is weak. Dirty components will cause this. 6 volt systems are ok only real problem the regulators can act up. Depends on how much you use it. The more the better.

I agree with John Mann. I would take the starter in to a shop and have them go through it (after checking your battery connections). Those 6 volt systems are really marginal for starting, everything has to be in real good shape for it to work properly. If it continues to give you problems you might want to consider converting to a 12 volt system. My .02 worth.

The 6v starter has bushings at the front and rear of the armature, with the distance between being almost 12" if one of the brushes are not making contact the magnetic force being unequal the shaft will bend causing the armature to drag on the field poles. The later 12v starters have a 3rd bushing at the rear of the windings preventing this from happening. Take your starter apart and check the armature if it shows signs of dragging this will cause low torque and high voltage drain. Hope this helps .
