Were the Oliver 55's made at their Charles City, Iowa plant or were they imported from the David Brown Company in England ????

If the 55 was american built what was the reason for importing several models from David Brown ??? What models were imported ???

Have you all seen the nice article in the new Antique Power magazine about the little Oliver 55's ??? A friend of mine sent me a nice book about David Brown and his tractors for Xmas and on the back cover was a picture of the first Oliver 500 being driven off the assembly line by David Brown....

Why did Oliver buy those little tractors out when they were already building a better one... the 55 ???? Thats why I am wondering if they did indeed build the 55 here in the US ???

The imports were the Oliver 500 and 600. The 500 was a David Brown 885 (I think) in Oliver clothing. Looked almost exactly like a 550 Oliver. Not sure about the 600. No one at Case has ever been identified who admits to knowing a thing about the subject.

Oliver, and almost every other tractor manufacturer, found it was cheaper to import these smaller tractors. It cost the company less money to buy a tractor and put their name on it than it was to design and retool a whole new line of machines.

It does seem a little strange, though, that they were importing a competitor for their own 550, which was also being manufactured at the time. Especially since the 550 was a better tractor anyhow.

We purchased a 550 new in 1961 [still useing it] and we had gotten a David Brown 950 on a bad debt. The poor old 950 had gone though h*** sideways before we got it and we put many more hours on it both in the field and in the woods. Never did kill it traded it on a new 880 brown as all that cockshutt/oliver had was 1555/1655 and we felt they were to big and we would be upsizing our machinery also. Dad was never big on tractor power as we only had 300 acres and milked 60 cows, and sat on the tractor a lot of hours! So a big low utility tractor was what we wanted.

I thought I read somewhere that Brown imported Olivers to sell over there also.

Sir, Oliver 55 was built in Iowa. Father and uncle were at the plant and proving grounds at that time. there for tech training from their dealership.
