Oliver 880 pulling gas or diesel

We are in the process of building an 880 for pulling. We will use this tractor mostly for tug pulling with an ocasinal weight transfer. Should we go with the 354perkins or a gas out of an 1850

We have a factory replacement engine in our diesel Supper 88. It is a 310 waukesha WITHOUT A TURBO. We are currently pushing out about 140 Hp out of it running on straight diesel fuel. You might think I'm full of sh-t, but the one year we got a first in the 10,000 lbs class and a second in the 14,000 lbs pace(the limit) classes and still had enough power to pass the pace device. It is stroked only about 1/2 inch using stock pistons. The head is not ported. We also have a Crane cam in it. The pistons we put in the lathe and shaved off the tops. We're not shur what the compression ratio is, but it takes about 1/2 can of ether to keep it going until it's warmed up enough when it is 50 degrees out. It is probably anywhere from 11:1 to 13:1 compression ratio. We run the engine around 3000 to 3500 rpms going down the track. It sound like a darn john deere when it is cold at an idle. Diesel engines can perform just as well as gas engines. IF you do decide to use a diesel, don't turn too much fuel to it. Too much fuel will hurt your perfomance. Turn it back far enough that you can see an orange flame coming out hte stack when your working it at night at a pull. Our Super 77 we use on the farm, we went over kill on the fuel. We turned it back and are running about 80-85 hp wihout touching the engine otherwise. Now when we pull it, we have a nice orange flame coming out the stack. If anybody has any more info on how to get more power put of this engine please e-mail me. Some I.H 560 guys we compete against are running about 175 hp and we need more POWER. GOOD LUCK!

i would go with the 1850 because thiers so much more that you can do with the gas than you can do desiel motors .we have guys around here with 77 gas motors that getting from 90to105 hp out of them by stokeing the crank useing super c rods. that is just my thinking.thanks dave hope i was of help.
