1655 tilt steering ?

I hope someone has had a similar problem and can give me some clues. 1973 1655d

1) I have had the tractor 1 1/2 years

2) when the temp goes down below freezing the steering wheel freezes. rock solid

3) I figured water in the hydralic lines so i drained and re filled it. no change

4) the tractor runs. ( no hydralic whine ) after the tractor warms up ( 10 minutes ) the steering frees up.

5) i have a parts book . my tractor is missing the large knob to extend the steering wheel. all i have is a nut ( takes a 1 1/4 wrench ) and a 1/2 shaft that goes up and down about 3/4 inch . but my steering wheel does not move in and out.

6) can water get down in there and freeze around this shaft? not sure how the telescope steering is suppose to work or how it comes apart.

anybody else have a similar problem ? i hate to start tearing things apart if if someone can lead me down the right road. i also would rather fix this before i realy break something.

I believe there must have been a change via a serial number break from the round 'star' shaped wheel that you loosened to telescope the steering column and the push-button with the rubber boot. I had a '71 model 1655d that I bought new with the older style chrome-colored wheel that you turned like our 1550 to telescope the steering wheel. Within 5 years hydraulic oil started oozing up and out the steering shaft. The dealer at the time convinced me to change out the hydramotor as they had a retrofit kit with supposedly improved steering, less slop, and more trouble-free. It had the newer style with the boot and button, and that even if I replaced the seal, I would continue to have trouble. The newer unit was a different brand-- I don't recall the brand names but seems like one was a Saginaw (?). Anyhow, I never did have any more trouble while I owned the tractor for another 7-8 years. The post is correct about replacing the seal to prevent the water from going down the shaft, just be careful to know which hydramotor you have. Good luck. dwm

In answer to your question 5 , some of the later model four digit Oliver 55 series (1555 and 1655) had a button with a rubber boot in the center of the steering wheel that you pushed in and then pulled the steering wheel and shaft in and out ( toward or away from the operator ). The steering wheel and column did not come with the knob in the center that you turned to the left like a nut to allow you to move the steering wheel toward or away from the operator like you see on the four digit 50 series (1550 , 1650 and 1850 ) . The steering wheel on my 1855 is set up this way and I have a Oliver 1555 D(originally sold by the dealer in late 1973)which is set up this way as well. I assumed that it came from the factory this way new . When I originally bought the 1555 used from the original owner in 1995 or 1996 the button and boot were rotted away and it looked like you describe your 1655 . If your 1655 is like my 1555 there is an approximately 1/2 diameter rod that sticks up about an inch or two above a 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inch nut that holds the steering wheel on . When my steering column is working properly this rod pushes in (down with a thumb) and then the steering wheel and column slide toward or away from the operator . I assume that when this rubber boot or cover breaks down it lets water into the steering column and the rods rusts and freezes up . I fixed my 1555 by looking at the ITT service manual on 1855s which , if I recall , contained an exploded view of the 1855 steering column that was a larger version of the steering column on my 1555 . If your 1655 is like my 1555 you may also find that the steering motor which is at the end of the column is different from that show in the parts manual for the 1655 . As word of caution , in tearing down the column on my 1555 removal of the 1 1/4 nut resulted in my tearing up the steering wheel ( I had to buy a new one ) so I decided to leave the 1855 like it was with the in and out function of the column frozen .

Jeff I have encountered that exact problem with a customer a couple of times and yes water can and will get down around the steering wheel shaft and freeze up solid. You will have to remove the steering wheel shaft at the bottom of the shaft where it couples up to the hydramotor to drain the water, remove the steering wheel and pull the old seal out from the support tube and install a new one.
