OT-Need information on Underground Homes.

Kathy and I lost our home to fire December 8th. We are thinking about building an underground house overlooking the creek that runs through our ranch property. I would like to hear from anyone who has experience with underground homes...either positive or negative. Also, I would like to have names of experienced builders who specialize in underground home construction. Our email address is [email protected] .

I was involved, with another person, in the construction of an underground home in which the other construction worker is living and has lived for the past 20 years or so. He got his plans etc from an article in the magazine "Mother Earth News" (I'm not sure if the magazine still exists). The builder/owner lives in middle north Minnesota so heating is a consideration to them. They heat with wood only and as far as I know, are very well satisfied with the place. We built it using a "stack block" method - mostly on top of the ground and he (a heavy equipment operator) then covered the structure by berming out the walls with dirt and puting about a foot to a foot and one half of dirt over the roof. The place was not a mansion sizewise but has served them and their family for a long time. Sorry for being long winded.

I am also very sorry about your loss. We went through a fire in September 2000 and understand the impact it can have on your life. With respect to underground homes you should consider radon gas which is a natural decomposition product of small amounts of radioactive material in the soil or rock. The gas can go through poured concrete and is a significant cause of lung cancer. There are ways of controlling radon with special ventilation. The US EPA has publications on dealing with radon gas in homes.

Roland terribly sorry to hear of your loss. Fire is a terrible thing and I'm sure you lost many things that can't be replaced, but I am thankful you are OK.
I have a neighbor who built and in ground home a few years ago, the advantages are lower heat and cooling cost, and being fairly protected out of the weather. His was done by a concrete company who specializes basement construction. The only drawback i have seen with some of these homes is making sure it's well ventilated, as moisture condensation and mildew can be a problem. Cost wise I beleive it may actually be less expensive than a stick built home.
