Paul - Am looking for your advice. I started out with the N-series. Sold my 9N, completely restored a 1947 8N with loader, which I still have. Got an Oliver 550 for Christmas (last year) which is the finest tractor I ever straddled. Joined HPOCA, ect., became smitten by the Super 55. Found one today. S/N 7-888-518 so she is a 1954. Nice bush hog on the back. The amazing thing is she is absolutely complete (down to the shield on the nose cone.) Would have to eventually replace the rear tires... They are asking $2700.00 but I could probably walk with her for $2500.00. I realize this is a pretty low serial number, and how important it is to have all the sheet metal, etc., but I will probably have to sell the 8N to appease the "boss!" Any advice? I'm confident that the "55" will outwork the 8N and God forbid we ever have to part I will get a better return. Any advice on the early 55's would be appreciated. Thanks and Merry Christmas!

Vince, you must be living right. That is a steal, especially with the bush hog on it. The early 55's are not much different from the 550 you have. The 550 has a slightly bigger displacement. Does your 550 have power steering? Most likely the Super 55 won't. Does the Super 55 have external hydraulics? If it does you are really living right, because if you can find that option, you would have to pay $500-$600 for it. Check out the steering, the pto (clutches for that are a bit dear) and leaks in the rear wheel seals. Also, if you have the opportunity to pull off the brake covers take a peek to see if that seal is leaking. The parts for most of the mechanicals are still available, sheet metal is getting harder to find. Is that Super Diesel or gas? How's it run?

If I had the choice of keeping either an 8N or Super 55, I personally would choose the Super 55. The 8N is a nice tractor, but it is not as good as a Super 55 in it's usefullness. Are you going to work this tractor or is it a restoration piece? The Ford might have the edge on parts prices and availability, but for me that wouldn't be enough reason to keep the Ford. One of the old fellows at my tractor club said "I don't understand why those Fords were so popular. They couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding!" He worked with them, I just play with them. Email me if you need any specific info on the Super 55. I have a very thorough shop manual.
