I.ve ran 12 volt and 8 volt on 88 standards and can see no differance in starting so are you sure everything is working good in 8 volt system . Such as starter, cables etc . Actually just put 6 volt generator back on ,as it has movable third brush turned up volts and drove on .

With 12v your old light bulbs will likely blow before you get your hand loose from the switch, I would put 12v bulbs in, although the coil will probably work for a while I would put a good resistor on the old coil or the best solution would be a 12v coil. When I bought my 88 it had been changed to 12v, whoever did the work messed up,changed battery to neg ground, put the resistor on the distributor instead of ahead of the coil. After putting up with poor starting and not running like an oliver should I put on 12v coil changed the polairity to pos ground, checked to be sure the coil was connected correctly. I could not believe the difference.
