Well I finally found one in my price range!! I have a possible oppurtunity to purchase a non-running, but basically complete unit for about 300 bucks. I think it is a good deal, but I am a little nervous about what I am getting into. All of my engine experience is with gas motors. I know that the rebuild will be especially costly to do it right - about 3000.00 I have estimated. What are some of the pitfalls that I should be careful of, and what problems were these tractors particularily noted for? I am still going to get the tractor regardless, but just want to know what to watch out for. Thanks for anything you fellas got to say!!

I'd second what John Mann said- it's just too big a risk to buy a non-runner, because you can't tell what is wrong. I bought a non-running AC D-17 Series 4 (factory 3 point, much higher demand than other series)- I got lucky and sold it for what I had in it, primarily because I didn't have time to restore it. The buyer, I understand, found that the engine was too badly damaged to rebuild, and the "Power Director" (2 speed) was also a total loss. He's got over 8 grand in it, and is trying to get 6 out of it, which is unlikely. You can buy a running 88 in decent shape for $1,500 to $2,000, and just do cosmetics. That's much more fun.

You might be better off to wait and by one running . There are so many things that could be wrong you will never know till you get it running then have to remove the engine to install trans bearing or what ever else. The engine can be majored for about 1500 proving you components are decent, like the valves are good block align bore is ok etc. On the other hand if you have good luck unlike mine you may come out with a fantastic machine.
