I'm searching for a flywheel ring gear for a Cockshutt 540. Would any of you know if the Oliver line made an equivalent model to the Cockshutt 540?

I think you know by now Oliver had nothing to do with your 540. What you want is a flywheel ring gear. They used a Continental F162 engine. The flywheel is the same on all the F series engines 124, 140 & 162. Some Massey Harris tractors as well as the Oliver S44, 440 and many power units on fork lifts etc. used that engine. You shouldn't have much trouble finding one.

Thanks for the information. I thought that too, I actually have a flywheel off an F124 (MH 101 Jr) and another flywheel off a Massey swather that was an F140. Those two are the same but they are different than the one on this Cockshutt (smaller with less teeth). Did Continental make the flywheels themselves do you think, or were the flywheels supplied by an outside vendor? In any evet, they weren't all identical. That would have been too easy I guess.

That's news to me. I figured they were all the same and furnished by Continental. Your best bet would be to find a salvage yard that has a 540 they are parting out. There aren't many Cockshutts in this part of Illinois

I just got to thinking. If the teeth are not completely missing you can flip the starter gear over and use the other edge of the gear. It takes heat and some time but should work. Thats what I done to a LeRoi engine and it works fine. Another way would be look for a gear with the same number of teeth.
