I just bought a 1961 770 with reverse o torc and was wondering if it is working properly. When shifting, the torque converter engages rapidly no matter what engine rpm. In fifth and sixth gear it will kill the engine unless it is reved way up. The fluid level is in the normal range. It seems to me like it should slip a little at low rpm, or is this how it is supposed to work?

Bob - Gary's description is right on. When you put the reverse-o-torc in FWD or REV with the motor idling, there should be no movement and no load should go on the motor. The tractor shouldn't start to move until you bring the RPMs up. Sounds like there's a problem with the torque converter - it's way too stiff.

If it working right when you but it in gear it should not move until you give it some gas. The engine has to be idling when you put it in gear. Then as you give it gas it should move basically like a automatic trans. in your car but will stay in the same gear you put it in.
