I have a 2270 that leaks hydraulic oil internally into the rearend. Also the pto won't shut off. Is this problem related?

I belive a 2270 has a "55" series Oliver rear end with closed center hyd. If that is the case the PTO is hyd operated and could be the source of your leak. The O-rings go bad and leak oil into the rear end. Look and see if there are two small lines going into the PTO control valve. If there are, take them loose and cap them off. If your leak stops you found your problem. Good luck, WB.

Hey WB,

I thought the PTO on those tractors was run off the rear end pump with gear oil and not the hydro pump. Am I wrong on that one??? Maybe I dreamed that or something..... . Ive worked on too many tractors and get them confused sometimes....If it is hydro operated and not gear oil operated that could be the source of the leak like you said. I will check on that..

No I would say you have two different problems. The first problem is you have a hole somewhere in the hydraulic pan that is allowing oil to escape into the rear end. You will need to pull the hydraulic unit off from under the seat and see what the problem is, most likely you will be able to see the hole and hopefully fix it.

Thinking of that I have a tractor that is doing the same thing and I need to tear into it. I heard of a guy that had that problem with an 1855 and didnt like the pan and having two oil galleys, so he took the pan out and ran hydraulic oil in the rear end instead of gear oil and made a pickup tube for the hydraulic pump that would pickup oil from the rear end and put a screen on it. That way he ran the hydraulic system from the rear end. I need to talk to him and see what he did to make it work, but all the new tractors work that way, I dont see why an Oliver will not. Hmmmmm , any comments on that one???

As to the PTO not stopping, that is driven off the rear end pump and has nothing to do with the hydraulics. I would say it is out of adjustment or your pto plates are getting warped. Try adjusting it first before tearing into it and see what happens. If you need help adjusting it let me know and I will see if I can help.

Just some free advice :-)

If you plug off the bottom line that runs the pto,
it will stop running. There is two lines that run int the pto housing as wrenchbender suggested.

It sounds like the control may be keeping the PTO engaged all the time. Plug off that line and see if your oil leak stops. You might also take the rod loose from the arm on the control valve and work it manually with some vise-grips clamped on it and see if it will disengage. Those PTOs had O-rings and the replacements will be quad-rings. Check it out and let us know what you find, WB.
