while feeding yesterday I noticed eccesive play in steering so investigated and found the pitman shaft had broken just above the lower bearing. Have any of you had experience in working on these? Can the shaft be aquired and replaced without any special tools? Or do I need to get a complete unit? Any help will be welcome. Pete

One last comment, After complete assembly is installed, before you put the cap on, fill the unit up with hydraulic oil for lube.

Should not be too big of a job, I just had the steering unit out of my 1855 to put in a seal. I am assuming you have a wide front, if you have a narrow front it is a little different. Take the front white grill off, the two oil coolers off, and the radiator comes out. Then you have a tapered bolt on the steering unit that comes out and you may have to loosen the tie rods and the pitman that the tierods hook to. Then pull the steering unit out. You will have to look then and see what is broken, if the pitman is broken you should be able to get it out now and put a new one in. If the steering shaft is broken you will have to open the steering unit. It should have two bolts and a plate on the top of the unit, take the plate off and turn it upside down over a bucket and the gear and shaft should fall out. You will need to replace that shaft if it it broken. Do not forget to replace that O-ring at the bottom of the steering unit or it will leak as soon as you put it back togeather. Also make sure you get the shaft put back in the unit on the center or it will not steer correctly. Not a hard job, take you one evening. Let me know if you get stuck, I have been in a few. Good luck

Thanks Shep, That is the information I was look for. Yes the shaft is busted and gone from just below the pitman. I have no clue as to why this happened. Tractor has never been abused in the 6 years I've had it.

Yes that is odd that it broke there, be alert when putting the steering unit back in, you may have a bearing that went bad or something may have gotten in a bind to cause that to break. The shaft should just slide right through the bearings with little resistance when putting it back in. If I were you I would replace those bearings too, not much more work while you are there. Let me know how you get along.

Shep, I called the local parts man and he shows 2 different shafts. No serial number designations. He keeps one in stock at $85. and the other can be ordered for $125. I will have to pull it apart to compare which one I have, but without even guessing I bet I know which one I have. :-) I will pull it down tonight. Thanks for your help. Pete

I forgot but one shaft will have a large nut on the bottom of the shaft you will have to take off and the other shaft will not have that nut on the bottom, it has the bolt behind the pitman arm, that is the easiest way to tell them apart. Your parts man shoud be able to tell them apart by that big nut on the bottom.

Yeah, if I remember correctly there is one shaft with 6 or so splines in the pitman arm and the pitman does NOT have a bolt through the back. The other shaft has like 25 or 30 splines on the pitman and is held with a bolt and a locking nut on the back of the pitman arm that must be taken out before you can remove the steering unit. I thought there was a serial number break on those about 1972 or so. I know because my 1850 is one way and my 1855 is the other. I know what you mean by the prices, I always bust the expensieve one too :-) Good luck Pete, let me know how it turns out.

Shep, I got it out last night. Wasn't bad at all. I have all the parts with me today and will go to partsman after work. Mine is the one with the 6 splines. I hope he will have the bearings also as both need replaced. The one question I have is the shaft came out with the cap. How do I seperate the cap from the shaft?

You are talking about the gear on the upper end of the shaft???? I think that is pressed on, Im not sure on that. Have the Agco dealer look at it and see, I have never had the gear off the end of that shaft. For sure I would replace all the bearings and dont forget that 4 sided O ring in the bottom of that steering unit, It will leak if you dont replace it, trust me!!!!

Sounds like you about got this one licked.....
Good luck

To remove the gear off of the shaft remove the plug in the center of the gear it has a O ring around it put a socket on the stud use a air wrench and back it out it will pull the gear off of the shaft. Do not remove the snap ring that is in there that is what pulls the gear off.

Too late Lee got snap ring out then took bolt out. Had to get gear off to see which shaft I had. Turns out there are 3 (yes three) different shafts not 2. Two of them are near identical except for length. And yes I have the one he doesn't have in stock.:-( But on the lighter side the price for the one I need falls in the middle. One is $85, one is $125 and the last is $145. The part should be in Thursday. The component parts(bearings,O-rings,nut and so forth) I will get tonight at G&R tractor in Duram,Ks I will keep you all posted
