550 loader oil

My 550 has an Oliver loader with the front pump. The tractor manual calls for SAE 30 for the tractor hydraulic but that seems a little thick for the cold weather here in SE Michigan. What kind of oil should I use for the loader and it should it vary in the winter?

Mine has Type A trans fluid in it, works great! But I'm going to change over to universal trans/hydraulic fluid when I get the cylinders redone this spring. From what I've seen this works good year round. I'm also going this way on the tractor hydraulics, but not the differential - since it's a stand-alone sump I'd like to keep the heavy lube on my S55's 45 year old seals and gears.

Whereabout are you in MI? I'm 1/2 hour west of Port Huron.

Hi Dale. I also have the front pump installed for my loader. I use the newer all purpose tractor fluid (made by many manufactuerers) that meets the Oliver type 55 standard. I noticed the loader works much better now that it has a fluid that is actually designed for hydraulic systems instead of engine lubrication. I also use it in my 3 point hydraulic system and the transmisssion too. Flows great during winter up here in the Berkshire hills of western Mass.

I have always used 10 wt Hydraulic Oil in all my loaders and hydraulic systems. I dont think I would use a 30 wt oil in the loader in the cold, that would put a great deal of extra stress on the pump I would think. You have to remember that oils were a lot different in the 60s and 70s than they are today, and back then they didnt have the grades of hydraulic oils that they do today. Just my 2 cents.
