Ok Oli fans! I need Help. My 1850 lost its steering...completely since parking it about a year ago due to a trans problem. I went to get her ready to ship to the fix it shop since I've never split one, and there is absolutely no steering at all. Does she need to be run to pressurize the steering gear again or what other problem am I looking at? Also, clue me in on the Waukesha vs Perkins thing. Am told that Perkins is more desireable. How do I tell em apart?

This is off the subject, kinda, but what is wrong with the transmission? The Perkins diesel is the way to go. We have 3 1850's with the Perkins.

Is an 1850 perkins. Trans kept jumping out of 3rd when I bought it. After that it began to jump out of all of them. Found out one of the shift forks was broke and welded it on the tractor, after which either some slag or a piece of loose metal knocked out a tooth on the #3 gear on the shaft. Poor design dictates I need to split the tractor to remove the gear rod, unless someone has a better suggestion.

You have the best idea to fix it Terry. If you had the tools, you could do it yourself. Get an Oliver and an IT shop manual, and go at it. They aren't hard to fix, just big.

I agree with the other posts.One other thing that happens is people pull up on the steering and pull the shaft splines out of the steering valve.The steering wheel will turn with little restance in this case.Push in for a tepary fix.

We went through this a few weeks ago here. The 1850 diesel has a Perkins. The gas is a Waukesha.

The hydraulic system probably has a stuck flow divider valve. This valve directs fluid to the steering. Start the engine & hold one of the remote valves in a work position, if it has a cylinder attached, allow it to fully travel & continue to hold the lever. while doing this attempt to steer the tractor. I it steers, you have found the problem.
