OLIVER 1650G PROBLEMS

THE OLD OLIVER STARTED SPITTING AND SPUTTERING LAST WEEK. I TOOK OUT THE SPARKPLUGS AND A FEW WERE FOULED OUT. I HAVE GAS GETTING THROUGH TO THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD. I TRIED WIRE BRUSHING THE PLUGS, BUT DIDN'T SEEM TO HELP. IT STARTS RIGHT UP WHEN I PULL THE CHOKE OUT, BUT WHEN I PUSH IT BACK IN IT STARTS SPITTING PUFFS OF SMOKE AND BACKFIRING! WHAT DO I DO? ANY ADVICE WOULD BE APPRECIATED!

Are the plugs fouled with oil? If so, you may have bad rings. Get a compression tester and test each cylinder. Readings should be over 100 lbs. on each cylinder and fairly even readings. If compression is OK, then You may have a carburetor problem. Take the carburetor off and examine it closely, you could have plugged jets, a bad float valve, or cracked float. Carburetor kits usually aren't very expensive. Another thing you mentioned was backfiring. Backfiring is common with an engine slightly out of time. Has anyone loosed the distributor clamp and turned the distributor? These are some places to start anyway. Just my two cents worth.

I had some of the same problems. My 1650 would start to miss and spit after it had been pulling
hard for about 45min. I had the carbarator rebuild
and timing check. runs great now
