6 cylinder turbo diesel 310cid

Hello - I have what I was told is an Oliver 310CID turbo diesel engine. It is a 6 cylinder with a massive flywheel (about 4 inches thick), roosamaster injection, pencil type injectors, airesearch turbo, etc. Can anyone tell me which Oliver it came from? What kind of horsepower would it have produced? I'm thinking 1950-T...

I got the engine as a basket case that came from Clemson University as a teaching tool. It appears to all be there and nothing shows any wear. Was originally going to use it in a truck project, but would rather find a Detroit 4-53. Rather ironic that both engines could have been from about the same tractor...

The 310ci Waukesha turbo engine was stock in the 1950-T, the 1855 and the 1955 Oliver tractors. There were some slight differences that would even allow you to almost know what one of those three it came out of. The earlier model engines would have come from the 1950-T and the larger HP engines with cast oil coolers in the block should be from the 1955 although some were in the 1855s as well. There are several updates you need to do to the engine if you are going to overhaul the engine, I think there is more on that here in the archives, we have talked a lot about the 310 Waukesha.
The Detroit engine you were talking about came out in the 1900 and 1950 Oliver tractors.

My engine does not have an oil cooler. But, I am not totally sure if it was ever installed in a tractor. It lived it's life on a test stand at Clemson. There are what appear to be date codes in several of the big castings that range from 9/72 to 3/73.

If I were to overhaul it I would only have to replace the bearings, rings and gaskets. Even the bearings look new, but have been banged around a bit since it has been apart many years. There are a couple of rings missing. But it should not take any machine work - just a good vatting to clean it well.

Does anybody know the horsepower this thing would have been rated at?

The Oliver 1950 T tested 105.24 PTO Hp in Nebraska test 969 with the 310 turbo diesel in 1967.

That is about right, the 310ci turbo was about 105Hp to 115 hp in the 1955's. So they are a little over 100hp. That is one engine I would not push the Horse Power on, they have been known to make windows in the side of the block.....
