I have rebuilt a 1950 66 rowcrop. All is good thus far. I have rewired & I'm about to convert from 6-12 volts. I have a late 70's GM alternator (new) that will bolt up pretty well. The problem is the connections. This alternator has a battery, field & then a 3rd post. Can anyone help with wiring advice. I have already rewired with gauges, rebuilt switch, coil etc. I also have a resistor between the switch & the hydralectric lift. My major question is the current flow to & from the alternator. I thought I had it charging earlier. But I seem to have lost it. My connections were from the battery to the battery post on the alternator. Field to the battery post on the altenator and the 3rd post to the access. post on the switch via the amp meter. I had 12.5 volts at all terminals when tested but the tractor would not run without the battery cables connected. After shutting down & restarting I'm not getting any reading back out of my alt. Have I cooked it or did it just fail? Help please.

The hot wire from the ammeter as well as the black[or red] from the plug in pig tail are both attached to the alt output, the white wire activates the alt by touching the hot wire for a second[for a quick test] this wire can be attached to the ign switch with a 12 V in line light, when the alt charges it will go out as autos do.

If the two small wires are cross connected the alt.will work, but the battery will discharge through the small wire when not running. This does not allways cook the alt.You may need to run the engine faster to start chargeing. You may have melted one of the wires.Check things again.
