Will a 1850 motor bolt into a 88? If so are they the same length or do you need to need to make the drive shaft or move the radiator?

I know a 310 out of an 1855 will slide right in to an 88 i don't think the perkins out of a 1850 will work

It is my understanding that the 1850 gas engine is almost a direct replacment in an 88. The bell housing isn't a problem provided you use the 88 flywheel, clutch and bell housing. You will have to shorten the trans to clutch shaft slightly as well as the pto shaft. But I understand it isn't be very much. You will have to use a smaller diameter fan as the water pump sets up higher than an 88's.

This is supposed to make a good combo.

I have done several different conversions on Oliver tractors and the only thing I will say is that you can put any engine into any tractor given enough fabrication and money to put into it. By looking at the book, and I assume you are talking about a gas engine and not a diesel, the 88 ran a 231ci gas engine and the 1850 ran the 310ci gas engine. Both were 6 cy engines so the length should not be a major issue but the size of the engine and the bellhousings may be an issue. The other problem you are going to have is that you are putting an engine in from a lot later series tractor. I do not know enough about the 88s to know if they had a chain coupler system like the later series Olivers or not, but that is something you need to check, also if the 310 will bolt to the 88s hydra power or not. You need to do a lot of checking on this before you tackle it, but it does not sound too easy.

If you are attempting to change the diesel engines I would think that would be worse because the 1850 ran a 354ci Perkins diesel that was a one of a kind engine for Oliver and generally only fits in the 1850.

Just my 2 cents

It fits, use the bell housing motorplate flywheel etc off your 88 block. Very easy swap. 100's of them done. 1100 massey gas motor (320 cubic inch 95hp factory 22-2400 rpms) is the same deal too use all the 88 stuff and it bolts right up. Make sure you keep your 88 motor to get all the stuff off it you need. aRt
