Oliver 880 disappearing hydraulic fluid

please help.my 880 keeps losing it's hydraulic fluid.no external leakage so it must be entering the tranny.it doesn't have the hydralectric unit-just the standard dual hydraulics.i pulled the tranny fluid check plug and sure enough it was high.how hard a fix is this?is it just a seal or something bigger?can it be fixed from the top without breaking the case apart?does anyone have exploded drawings they can share so i can see what i'm in for?best yet-is this a repair that can be handled by a backyard mechanic?

Seals are gone or the pump housing is cracked. Remove the PTO and th long driveshaft. The pump can then be unbolted. It usually is a lot easier to pull th top (transmission) plate because getting the long PTO drive shaft back in is somewhat difficult, plus it will let you see what is going on.

THe seals usually go bad because of pump wear. Best bet is to pull the pump and have a pro look at it and reseal it.

My dad, possibly the world's least mechanically inclined person, pulled the unit on our 770. He dropped the plow off the hitch with no breakaway couplers and tore the pump up. The braze job lasted almost 10 years before the leak got so bad that the hydro oil cost more per year than the repair...

You can handle this job. It is usually one of two things. Seals on the pump or a cracked centerplate. When it's full of oil, does the pump have excellent lifting capacity? If so it is likely the seals. Pull the cover off the pto. Three bolts inside and now pull the pto shaft. Unbolt the unit from the transmission and lift it off. Report on what you find in the pump.
