I have an Oliver 77 tractor. I have been having trouble with the engine surging when I accelerate to full throttle with a light load on. It doesn't bother when I'm not pulling anything. What could cause it?

Check your govenor linkage for binding. There is a surge adjustment on the govenor itself, but you should use the book to adjust.

I know there was a recall on the governor bushing in the blocks of 88's about 30 years ago. If yours was missed like our 88 was, then that is probably the cause. But first, I would do what Snappy said and check your linkage. To do that, first you want to take the air cleaner off, which isn't that big of a deal. Next, take off the rod that goes from the governor lever to the carburetor. Only take off the end on the governor lever though. Then, set the tractor to full throttle (all of this performed with the tractor not running, of course)on the throttle quadrant. Then you want to grab that disconnected rod and push it back towards the dash which would make the carb wide open. Then, check to make sure the other end of the rod is about 1/16th of an inch past the hole on the governor lever the rod came out of. That will take care of that. If the governor lever is not letting the carb open up all the way, you'll have to shorten the rod that is under the gas tank, which also goes to the governor lever, below the other one. Then check to make sure there are 19 (I think) coils inbetween the middle stop and the left stop on the governor spring. And finally, probably the first thing I would try, is turning in the bumper spring screw on the governor housing itself. While the air cleaner is off, you'll see it on the front of the governor housing. Just loosen the nut and turn the screw in, then tighten the nut. Hope this helps.

Since it only happens under a load, have you check to see if the clutch is slipping?
