80 standard on steel?

I recently purchased what I think is a 1944 model 80 standard unstyled on steel,this tractor has no starter,generator or wheel brakes. I plan on restoring it, but was wondering if any one would know why this is on steel at this age?. It looks to be all original, I know some makes of tractors where shipped with steel during WW2, possibly this is one of them. If so, would any one know how rare this one would be?. Thanks.

I disagree with the previous followup as I prefer the tiptoe steel.While it is a little more inconvenient, it adds some character to the tractor. Ihave a rowcrop 80 {1938} with steel it was advertised as "power on tiptoe" when it first came out. Good luck with your project.

Lots of tractors were equipped with steel wheels, especially during WW II when rubber was scarce. FYI the Oliver 80 was never styled. I really don't believe you have anything all that rare. The Olivers had what they called "TipToe" steel wheels. I personally would never want a tractor w/ steel wheels, but from what I have heard a lot of farmers actually preferred them (why, I don't know!). If I were you, I would restore it & add a starter, generator & lights, (and rubber tires, as long as I could get the stamped Oliver rear wheels and not have to use those ugly spoke ones!)
