How would I get a starter for a '48 60 Standard?

Again thanks to everyone who has been helping me. I posted a message "More numbers on my Oliver" that I still need more help with.

Here are the steps I am taking and sure would appreciate someone confirming that I am on the right track (or not).

Step 1. Identify the tractor model and year (done, 1948 60 Standard)

Step 2. Confirm engine type/model (I know it's a 4 cyl gas, that's it)

Step 3. Try to "turn over" engine by hand to ensure that the engine is not seized (If it is seized, I will deal with that separately, if not, proceed to "Step 4")

Step 4. Once engine ID is confirmed. a)try to locate a starter (as I mentioned in my first post, there is a hole where the starter should be and I have looked around the property to see if I could find the starter to have it rebuilt, but no luck, so I will need a replacement). b)Get a manual for the tractor and engine.

Step 5. Determine correct spark plugs, spark plug wire set, distributor cap, points, etc., replace and set up to spec.

Step 6. a)Determine correct oil. Do oil change. b)Drain gas tank and fuel line. If there is a filter, clean or replace it. Fill tank with new gas. Ensure fuel deliver system is working. c)Check and repair cooling system, replace worn or broken belts.

Step 7. Connect battery. Ensure spark/fuel/air intake/exhuast/cooling systems are all in basic working order. HAVE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER AT THE READY!!!!

Step 8. Try cranking. (Again, depending on what happens during this step will determine what happens next. It may be possible that I should post prior to trying Step 8 where memorial donations should be sent ;)

Thanks for the information. MCL posted that he actually did swap out the 60 and 70 starters. But John posted where I could get a rebuilt.

I have yet to be able to move to my new property so I don't know if the engine is any good yet. But as soon as I find out I now have the information that I need to get the starter.

point is, that starter is fairly generic. go to an agco/allis dealer and see that they can do for you.

beware -- i'd say you couldn't touch one for under $100. if you're looking cheap and rebuild, find a junk yard.
