All,

We Still use our 55 for day to day tasks and continue to have issues with the older generator starter combo. Unreliable even after several rebuilds. Every year it is a different hassle and winter starting is a hassle. Considering change to alternator with built-in regulator and negative ground starter. Any suggestion on common auto parts that make good conversion choice?

after your 12v conversion consider the Genisee electronic ignition. next to the 12v conversion it has really let me enjoy my 55 more than any thing. No more filing points. Seems to have hotter fire. Best $100 I've spent on the ole girl in a while. the article in the Archives convinced me.

Finished converting my 55 last month. Starter doesn't care whether 6 or 12v. I used a single wire marine style Delco Alternator and a Coil and resistor out of my old Dodge Van. Runs Great. Fires in 3 seconds flat and I can go to 2200 RPM as soon as warm!

I converted to 12 volt negative ground one month
after I got my 55. Got tired of hassle with old
system, starts on first turnover now even tho it
could use a carb overhaul. Used a 1977 Chevrolet
truck alternator and a new 12 volt car coil, new
plug wires (copper), end of problems!

I used delco parts off an old truck. You have to make a braket to hold the alternator. You allso have to add a restrictor to the electric line to the coil,in GM trucks its in the wireing.Works so much better wish i had done it sooner.Be sure to look at the conversion stories on the left of this page.
