The hydraulics quit on an IH 574 I bought at auction- took it apart, and hydraulic/tran fluid was milky, and filter was clogged with goop. Book calls for IH "Hy-tran" fluid- we don't have a Case/IH dealer within 100 miles, so I talked to the parts guy, and he said anything with the additives will work- JD, IH, co-op, etc. But he said never, never use plain 10 wt. oil- you always get condensation in the cast-iron case, and water builds up. With plain oil, water settles to the bottom and rusts everything. With "hydraulic fluid" with additives, it keeps the water in suspension and prevents damage- and if we were just smart enough to change the fluid and filter every couple of years, there'd be no problems.

That is a good Question, My 1650 manual says 10W motor oil mixed 16-1 with Oliver part# 102 082-A additive. I am sure they meant non detergent.
I was planning to use a premium hyd oil. JD hy-guard is supposed to be good stuff. Maybe someone will have some more info..

Craig , that is what universal hydraulic fluid is. 10W motor oil with all the additives. Once the additives are added to the 10W motor oil , they call it fluid. I had read that in a book on hydraulics. Scott

I use Farm Oyl "Ag-Master" my 1650.

Universal hydraulic fluid is what I use in mine.
