SOUNDS LIKE YOU'VE HAD A LITTLE EXPERIENCE WITH THE DETROIT.DO YOU KNOW WHERE I COULD GET THE 17.1-1 PISTONS OR A TURBO KIT? MY NEIGHBOR HAS AN M&W KIT ON AN OFF GREEN 4020,NO PROBLEMS.THE MOTOR IN THE TRACTOR THAT I AM INTERESTED WILL PROBABLY NEED SOME NEW SEALS&GASKETS SO I'M THINKING IT WILL GET A FULL OVERHAUL.ALSO ARE THE SEALS IN THE BLOWER ANYTHING TO MAINTINANCE?THANX FOR ANY HELP IN ADVANCE.NOT VERY FAMILIAR W/THIS ENGINE.

Well I guess I will toss my two cents in. First I am not real familiar with detroits' but I did talk to a detroit mech. that works for stewart stevenson this weekend about this conversion for my 1950. He said that the "T" motor uses a two piece piston and the rod bolts directly to the wrist pin. So new rods would also be needed. He also said that the early 53s had a different "larger" rod bearing dia. If so a different crank would be needed. Also all late 53s have four valve heads including the "T" motor.
So some checking with an expert would be a good idea. I have my eye on a "core" motor at a salvage yard, the turbo is broken but the ex. manifold is good. I am not trying to be a smart a_ _ it's just that I have started similar projects and found them much deeper than I expected.

All 1950's had four vavle heads,even late 1900's. I guess it would depend on what you are going to do with the tractor are you going to work it in the field or just take it to the tractor pull. The 17-1 pistons are avaiable for the standard rod, if not through Detroit they are avaiable through K-C piston& sleeve Co. K-C also has high and low compression pistons for the 71 seies.

Can you tell if it's a four valve head from the outside? I have two 1900s One is a 1961 and I am not sure about the other one. They are both checker board.

The pistons are avaiable through Detroit, you would want them for a 4-53T. There are different seals for the blower,but might not be necesary just to pull with. The turbo would be avaiable from Detroit too, but you might want to check some salavage yards, truck or industrial for the turbo. Detroit web site is Detroit Diesel.com.
