Generator light stays on

OK , I'm puzzled. I can use other opinions before I go any futher. I start the tractor. The generator light stays on. Use to be if RPM's were raised , light would go out. Generator charges at that point. I can see sparks through the back of the generator , indicating that it is charging. The generator light would be out. As time went on , raising the RPM'S would not start it charging. The light would stay on. No sparks seen through the back of the generator to indicate charging. Now , when I took the voltage regulator cover off. The cut out points were open. If I make contact with the points , the generator light on the dash goes out , and it charges fine. When the tractor is shut off , the points open like they are supposed to. When I start the tractor up , I have the same problem over again , until I manually make contact with the points on the regulator. Easy , lazy fix. Just buy a new voltage regulator. So that is what I did. After installing and polarizing , I started up the tractor , and guess what. I still have the same problem as I did with the old voltage regulator. What do you guys think? Any suggestions would be thankfull. Scott

The other posts gave excellent advice, heres my2cents. I'd look to see if you need brushes inthat generator and shine up the commutator. I had my generator rebuilt this spring for my770. It was a worst case senario, I needed an armature ,complete rebuild and new reg. ran me $120. I considered putting on a GM alternator but decided to keep it original as the rest of the tractor is in decent shape and probably worth more as a collectable than a work tractor.good luck- John

Scott, When I had this problem on a forklift, I went the same route you have. I finally made a jumper wire went from bat terminal on regulator, to the battery, light stayed out, but my jumper got hot soon. I traced the circut and the wire went to the starter. The conection was bad, I cleaned it up put on a new wire end terminal, and it stays out and charges fine. I hope this helps. Kent

Provided the generator has good bearings and windings the armature may be worn enough that the mica is holding the brushes away from the armature, if so the armature may need to be turned and the mica scraped from between the copper segments. If you have a lathe you can do the turning and remove the mica with a hacksaw blade with the edge ground narrower. Only remove a thin layer at a time until the copper is clean. Remove about 1\64 or so of mica. Hope this helps. Delbert

Pushing the points closed will polarize the system.So that is not the problem. Have you shined up the comutater? I would like to read the book before i say any more.

Most regulators, except the solid-state ones, have a screw used to adjust the points. It's also possible that the polarizing procedure didn't work . Worst case is that the generator is shot. If you have a service manual, there should be a procedure to test it. Or maybe one of the other folks call tell you the test procedure. A bad ground may also be responsible.
