On changing front axles , I have done it twice . I helped a friend change a set back or underslung front end like yours on a 1650 to a regular wide front . He used the 1650 to run a baler and the set back front end was causing the front tires to dig into the ground on turns and was rutting his pasture and hay fields . The tractor was also a little unstable when you moved round hay bales with a hay fork on the three point hitch . On an 1850 I own , I changed from a two tire tricycle front end to a wide front end I bought junk .

If I recall correctly , on the 1650 , we had to remove the front grill and the radiator and then unbolt the set back frame ( I think 4 or 6 bolts ) and then bolt up the wide front . A front end loader or boom pole will come in real handy for removing the grill and moving the axles around . On the 1650 , we had three people total with a boom pole so it was not much of a problem . On the 1850 , it was just me and another guy with no boom pole and it was something of a struggle . Also , while you have the radiator off , you may want to look at the streering cylinder which is underneath the radiator and has a shaft going down to the axle . There is a quad ring at the bottom inside the steering cylinder which seals the shaft . When it wears out hydraulic fluid will leak out of the cylinder at the bottom . The quad ring only costs about $5 to $10 at Agco and it is easy to replace with axle removed below and the radiator removed above . Thinking back now I cannot remember whether we removed the grills and radiators on the 1650 and 1850 to get the axles off or because we were going to replace the quad rings anyway .

The front axles are interchangable, but you will need all the hardware that goes along with the axle. I would be interested in the set back axle and I do have a regular axle to swap. By the way, I also do have a 1950 of my own and just love the tractor. The only distraction is the use of oil. Let me know what you end up doing with this one.

Will I'll be ******! I'm in central Wisconsin just a half hour out of Stevens Point. The axle is already off, but I will need some time to gather all the hardware and remove one tire.

Mike if the front end you are trading to Brad is not off of a 1950 GM Brad would need to keep his 158503A carrier, the bolt pattern is different.

You can change front ends without changing the front frame.
