Oliver 88 /Oliver 1650 questions

Was wondering if anyone could tell me the factory bore and stroke on an Oliver 88 tractor along with its shipping weight from the factory? Secondly did Oliver ever produce and LP cylinder head or manifold for the 1650. Thanks for your help.

If you want to make power with your 88, don't put in big valves. The name of the game is air speed bigger valves will give you a lot of volume but no speed. use stock valves have a 3 angle valve job done, machine the back of the valves and the head behind the seats so as not to restrict the air flow. Then have the head machined down 3/16 or so to get the compresion up and you will be on your way to more pulling power.A good cam will do a lot for you too.

There are five different gas heads shown in the part's book,the part No,s are 159595AS 159595ASA 159595ASB 158863AS 157401AS. The last two No's are shown for LP gas. The LP gas heads used stellite face'd valves for the exhaust, not sure if there was a difference in the combustion chamber or not, several different guides listed also.

My 1965 1650 owners manual shows an LP version.

Original bore and stroke was 3 1/2 X 4, for 232 cu. in. Not sure about a 1650 offered in LP. Looks like you may be wanting more compression/power out of your 88. A 880 gas head will fit on the 88, will hang over the block a little but fits fine. The 880 head (with the proper machining) will accept larger valves, (Chrysler 440's for example.) Along with a little polishing, will make this engine breathe real well. By the way, the 1650 manifold will bolt right on. Not sure about shipping weight, but you can get the 88's down to 4,500 lbs. very easy. You will make life really miserable for JD's and such if planning on doing a little antique pulling. Good luck.

Funny that you would say that because I have been pulling a John Deere A and G for over sixteen years. I guess I have come to the realization and limits to what I can do with a John Deere. Better a darker shade of green then red. Thanks alot for your help.
