We have an Oliver 770 with the power boost option. About two years ago a gear in the power boost section froze up on it's shaft. When we replaced it, we figured we'd better change all the clutches and the throw out bearing while the engine was out. We thought the main clutch pressure plate looked good and put it back in. Gears drug when we put in gear and I always thought it must be caused by putting the old pressure plate back in the tractor.

I just put a new pressure plate and throw out bearing in the tractor. Unfortunately, the problem remains. I adjusted the fingers in the pressure plate properly, the clutch free play is about 3/4 of inch. The clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate are not warped. The tractor will shift from gear to gear (including forward and reverse gears) fine but the gears really grind when it has been running in nuetral with the pedal out and then you depress the pedal and try to put it in gear. I thank you in advance for your advice. I am totally frustrated with this problem and completely baffled. Fred

Let me put 2 cents worth in and I'm afraid it is only 2 cents. I am not knowledgeable on the power booster. In the manual it does have in the trouble shooting: TRANSMISSION DIFFICULT TO SHIFT WHEN IN DIRECT DRIVE- the tractor is being held back by the overrunning clutch which loads the gears. Shift the transmission to neutral at the same time the engine clutch is disengaged, or shift into underdrive and then shift the transmission.

Another note is "Idle engine down before disenaging the engine clutch to shift."..... ...That's all I can find sorry. ..

My 770 is used for plowing snow mostly so I am always shifting from forward to reverse. If I wait too long in neutral before shifting when the engine is revved it just grinds and I must slow the engine down and wait for the gears to quit spinning. It appears to be an Oliver thing....shift quickly or "Idle engine down before disenaging the engine clutch to shift."

I use my 770 mostly for tillage and don't do much suttle shifting. I do some times have problems geting it in and out of gear with the powerbuster in high but the problem dissapers if I shift to low it has a faeture to prevent the tractor from rolling in the oppisit direction of the selected gear whitch I think has a lot to do with it. It sounds like you have an problem with the main clutch draging if that stops the gears in the transmission shouldent be turning regardless of the powerbuster. I'v seen it happen on that the clutch facings start coming off and warping a little and just draging a little on the pressure plate and fly wheel the tractor still stoped normaly but if in nutral the gears would turn with the engin running above 1200 rpm. Good luck

I agree with the possibility of warped facings on the clutch. Any drag whatsoever can spin the countershaft. Another possibility would be a binding pilot bearing on the back of the crank, however I dought after two years it would still be binding. I don't know what type of oil the 770 transmission uses but if you can use thicker oil it would also help. One last thing, make sure your linkage is ok. Even though you only have 3/4" free play you may not be getting full depression of the pressure plate. Make sure there isn't any flex in any of the linkage.

We own a late 880.To shift I always move to low on the torque before i shift pain in the ass but no grinding.

Again, I would like to thank all who have responded to my problem. I was able to adjust the fingers on my pressure plate without removing the engine over the past weekend. A local Oliver mechanic thought they might not be exactly even. It did help some but I still have a little problem going into gear from nuetral with the clutch out, to clutch in and any gear. It seems that if I will put the clutch in from nuetral and wait about ten seconds the transmission slips right into gear as if this is the time it takes for the gears in the gearbox to slow down.

One of you hit on it and I had been thinking perhaps the transmission oil I was using gave little drag on the gears. Because this tractor has the two speed gearbox and oil must be thrown up to them by the bull gears the manual says use 30 weight oil in the rear. Does anyone have any thoughts or comments? Thanks!

Since the book says use 30 weight I certainly wouldn't use any lower than that. Some of the "tractor fluids" you find in the 5 gallon buckets I believe are only rated at about 10 or 20 weight. If this is what you are using you might want to re-think or at least check into the actual rating of the fluid you are using. I certainly wouldn't "advise" you to use anything higher than 30 weight, however if it were my tractor I would probably go at least to 40 weight. Stay away from the muli weights. They will leak easier if you have marginal seals.

You must use 30W oil in a later model 770 that had the helical gears in the transmission. It used a pressure lube system and you could damage the transmission if you use anything different.
