Bought a used 1850 w/perkins diesel. suspect it
has a lot of hours on it so put in new rings to try to cut down on oil consumption. Runs good, starts fairly good, idles good and smooth but
uses lots of oil. idle-sometimes oil seems
to run out of the exhaust pipe and down over the exhaust manifold. Working it may smoke bad or not so bad sometimes at idle it doesn't smoke, other times it does. Should I be looking at putting in new sleeves and pistons or could this be a valve guide problem?

I was just joking, don't get your feelings hurt. There is a 1855 in the photo gallery owner's name is Shep, he complains about his smoking too. Is this you

Yup, thats me. I have an 1855 that likes oil too. I was just funnin as well. I can not make my 1855 stop eating oil, so after having the engine out 3 times trying to find the problem, I have just quit trying and invested stock in Shell!!!!!

Oil use from the rings or from the valves usealy stays the same.I would think you have other problems. The rings may need time to seat.My best guess is that an injector is leaking fuel into one cylinder or a valve is sticking on and off.If oil comes out the exashet loosen the manifold and see which cylinder is doing it.Then test that injector.you could allso run the engine with the valve cover off and see if the valves are moveing right.

Larry, I have the same problem with a White 2-105 with a Perkins engine. Sometimes it blows so much blue smoke you wouldn't be able to see where you are going if it weren't for the muffler taking above you. Then it stops. Uses alot of oil and seems to blow more smoke at or close to idle. I was told I need a complete overhaul but based on your input, I should check out the injector or valve first. My one question is that if it is a valve or injector, shouldn't I hear it miss firing?

I used to think i would hear it too.But one tractor proved me wrong.I was not useing full power and the muffler seemed to work too well. An injector can fire when its supposed to and still leak in between. As an example a friend bought a tractor that was blowing oil out.He had his son a car machanic overhaul it. I saw nothing wrong with the parts replaced. When they started it up it was doing the same thing. They had to replace the injectors, now it runs fine. When diesel blows out the stack it picks up all the soot it can and appears black and thicker.People think its oil.

Larry, this may explain why at certain times, I think the tractor is actually misfiring, but continues to run so smooth that I discount it. One final question deals with the excessive oil usage. Under certain working conditions, it may use a gallon of sae 40 in a 3-4 hour period. Next time it may not. How does the bad injector or valve cause the tractor to use so much oil or is this a different problem?
Thanks for your help!

Explaining it may be too hard.If an intake sticks open it alows the smoke to back up into the intake manifold. the next cylinder to fire gets smoke and some air so it doesnt fire well either. All this lets fuel wash down the rings into the oil.Oil leval can increase or decrease in a hurry.I feel the amout of heat in the head makes a big differance.

Try painting the tractor orange. At least it will look better when it smokes.

Yeah, everyone is used to seeing an orange tractor smoking and coughing, but not the meadow green ones. :-)
