I have a 1964 1800C with Saginaw power steering with the hydra motor. The steering is erratic. When turning from left to right or right to left, in the middle of the turn the steering wheel will turn 1.5 turns or so while the wheels remain where they are. As I continue to turn the steering wheel, the wheels will start turning again. The hydra motor also makes a chattering noise when turning, but not always. Anybody have any ideas? Is it the hydra motor, the steering unit in the front, the flow divider? The fluid is at the right level. If it is the hydra motor, any tricks in rebuilding those units?

If your steering column wobbles, the spline at the base of the telescope is bad. If the spline is good, your hydramotor has broken veins, or springs on the veins.

Thanks for the help guys. The splines on the pitman shaft and the steering sector arm are bad.

Thanks for the tip. I operated one of the hydraulic levers during a steering cycle and it did not help. The chattering stopped, but the play in the steering wheel was still there. The specific symptom is anytime during a steering cycle in either direction when the steering wheel is reversed to change directions the wheels momentarily move, and as the steering wheel continues to turn the wheels do not move until more that one full turn of the steering wheel has been completed. Then the wheels start to turn again and continue to turn until the steering wheel is reversed again. I took apart the flow divider and everything seemed in order. Any other ideas would be appreciated. The remaining options seem to be the hydramotor or the steering cylinder in the front of the tractor. Thanks for you help.

The problem sounds like it is in the Flow Divider. It should direct about 2 1/2 gallons of oil through the steering, to the cooler and return it to the resevoir. Any oil in excess of the above is directed to the hydraulic system. If the FD valve sticks open, it will allow all of the oil to flow through the open center hyd system. Next time the problem occurs, move one of the remote valve levers that does not have a cylinder attached to it and hold in a work position. If steering works now, it is the flow divider spool sticking open. Take the Flow Divider apart and clean and polish the valve. If you don't find the problem in the FD valve, repost and we will try to help you.
