550 diesel engine manufacture/serial number

It is down with crank problems. The oil sender line broke in the dark and blew all the oil out. Before I knew it there was a bad knock and I discovered the dry crankcase. I shut it down and plugged the hole and filled it back up with oil. There was still a knock. A friend pulled the oil pan and found the number two rod connector bearing had spun out and was basically gone. He said the crank did not look too damaged and could probably be rebuilt. He will have it taken in to town and checked out, but in the meantime, I am trying to find out more information on the engine.

It has two serial numbers on it: 180220L and 159002A 615J CAT. Can I imply that this is a CAT engine or what?

Appreciate any help in advance. It is down at an isolated construction site in New Mexico and I am in California trying to earn a living. My dealings are by phone and I would like to be able to talk to the repair shop, etc. with something like I know what I am talking about :-)

Is it possible to take the crankshaft out without removing the engine. My friend who is coordinating the repair for me there says the whold engine will have to be removed in order to disengage the crank from the trany. Is there another way?
