When the engine reaches "Middle gauge"operating temp. it runs great, with no missing. It starts good but will miss up till that time. I have replaced plugs, points,condenser, cap, cleaned carb.,timed it and problem is still there. Compression reading is fine. Could it be a valve hanging up? Please advise Any help appreciated! Thanks in advance!! Rick A.

Sounds like the float in the carb is out of ajustment. The fuel in the float bowl is too low. The mixture is too lean for a cold engine but ok for a hot engine. To confirem this see if it runs better with the choke on.

I would do a compression test with it cold. If the engine skips when it is cold due to compression loss some how it will show up, if not you probably have an electrical problem. The only thing you didn't change is the coil, usually
if the coil is bad it will show up after the machine is warm. Also if it has a vacuum advance mechanism make sure you are not loosing vacuum. (does this happen at high idle low idle or all the time)

You might want to check your valve lash to see if you have one or two valves too loose or too tight. Also check all of the push rods and make sure that the spot welds are not broken on the ends, I have seen several that have had loose or broken ends or even bent rods that will cause missing problems so check all of the valve system. I dont know how many hours you have on the engine but you may have a cam on the verge of being worn out too. Oh yes please listen to the other advise on the plug wires it will be easier and cheaper if it works. Good Luck shadetree.

Replace the plug wires. As they age they develop cracks that allow moisture from the air to enter and weaken the spark causing missing. As the engine and wires heat up, the moisture is driven off and the engine runs normally.
