I have a line on a Cockshutt (Oliver) 1950
WF tractor with the Detroit (GM) 4-53 engine at Aurora, OR. It's a tractor hauled down from Canada. The owner says the engine makes a little sound, but the tractor has low hours on it & tires and sheet metal are good, and wants a minimum of $2,750 for it. He claims it would make a good pulling tractor(after a overhaul I'm sure) , I'm not sure if Detroits are best for
pulling. Does anyone have experiance with them on the track ? Will a 6V-53 fit in this unit ?

Gil,I believe I'd jump all over a 1950 Cockshutt at $2750 even if it needs a little engine work. When the owner says it makes a little sound what does he mean?Detroits are known to make a little sound especially when you run a straight pipe like I do.hehe!Does he mean it had a rattle or knock?Hows the oil pressure?Last year I paid $5,000 at a farm sale for a decent 1967 Oliver 1950 rowcrop.I've used it to pull a 21ft Krause disk and its did a nice job.

As for tractor pulling these little 4-53 Detroits will surprise you.You could easily get 150 horses out of it.Back in the early 70's I used to pull a 1966 Oliver 1950 in the 15,000 # farm class. It had 23.1x34 tires and I ran 2nd gear.I only had 117 horses but many times out pulled tractors running up to 150 horses. Our 1950 had one size bigger injectors and turned 3300 rpms. You could hear it for 10 miles at night pulling a 6x16 Oliver plow or roading it to a tractor pull.

I've seen 6-53 Detroits put in 1900-1950 Olivers but we tore out the tranny with just the 4-53 in it.

GIL, 4-53'S WILL PULL LIKE YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE IF YOU DO IT RIGHT. YOU HAVE TO PUT IN MUCH BIGGER INJECTORS, TURN UP THE FUEL PRESSURE, AND CRANK THE RPM'S UP TO 4000, A TEFLON COATED BLOWER DOESN'T HURT EITHER. OUT FRIENDS PULL WITH DETROITS, LAST TIME THE 1950 WAS ON THE DYNO IT WAS WELL OVER 200 HP, GAURENTEED , TRACTOR SOUNDS LIKE A VERY CHEAP PRICE, JUMP ON IT. IF YOU WANT TO PUT A TURBO ON IT, THEY WILL REALLY MAKE POWER. FRIENDS RAN A TURBO OFF OF A 4-71, FUEL PUMP OFF A V-12, BIGGER INJECTORS, TURBO PISTONS, MADE 550 HP ON ENGINE DYNO, IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS EMAIL ME.
