From past experience of working in a dealership with another brand of equipment, I have seen a lot of tractors with 8 volt batteries in them. They don't seen to harm the starter on these old tractors since you probably have a couple of volts of volt drop through the wires and connections if you haven't replaced all of the circuits. If your tractor has the original generator on it, it is of the third brush type with a cutout relay on it. In other words, you do not have automatic amperage or voltage regulation on that setup. You should have a light switch that has three positions. All the way in is low charge, no lights. Second station (knob pulled to first detent) is high charge, no lights and third station is high charge with lights on. You are the regulator in this system. In the generator, there's a third brush that picks up voltage off of the comutator on the armature. The position of the adjustable third brush regulates the current flow through the field circuit to ground. The ground for the field circuit is in the light switch as described earlier. When the knob is all the way in the field circuit goes through a resistor, thus lower magnetic field strength, low output. When the knob is pulled out to the second detent, the field goes directly to ground, stronger magnetic field, thus higher output. To charge the 8 volt battery you need about 10 volts at the generator output. You can't move electrons through a wire with equal voltage pressure at both ends of the wire. Remove the band cover around the brush end of the generator. You will find a screw on the back frame of the generator, loosen the screw and move the third brush to adjust output. Moving the third brush closer to the armature output brush will increase current flow through the field circuit, thus higher output. Adjust for 10 to 12 amps with the light switch at second detent and 2 to 3 on the low output detent. If you have a operators manual, it explains that for intermittant tractor use, position the knob in the second detent and for continous opeation such as field work, run in the first detent. I remember my dad setting the output to 15 amps on second detent in the winter when we only did chores and grinding feed, then when spring came and field work started he would set it back. If you have a generator with a three unit regulator (cutout, amperage and voltage regulation) then you will have to mechanically adjust the voltage regulator to 10 volts with the battery fully charged. The only other problem is the lights, we used to have a source for 8 volt bulbs, I don't know where you can get them now as they were military surplus (as were the batterys). The 6 volt bulbs will be really bright, but not for long.
