With all this talk about swapping waukesha's out, has got me to thinking again. I have a Super55 gas that just hasn't ever had enough power for me. I can be brush hogging (5' Howse) about a 8-12" tall grass field, and start uphill, and it really loads down running out of torque. Add to this the fact that the Super is one of the few vehicles I own that ISN'T diesel, it would be nice to swap out to about a 45-50HP diesel. Around 3-4 liters I would think? Anybody ever do this or even think about it? And yes, my gas engine runs fine. Starts easily and runs smoothly, just doesn't have the poop I'd like it to.
Will the 55 drivetrain even stand up to such a thing?

Thanks!
Mark

Before you go to all that trouble check out the electronic igition from a past project on YTMAG's archives. I tried this and I swear it added 10hp to my 55. The best $100 I have spent on this tractor. Took 15 min to install.

Hey Mark, why don't you just swap in the 550 engine as its larger bore gives you more horse power and torque? You could overbore the Super 55 for the same effect.

The engines' been rebuilt once a while back. Since the only kits you can get anymore are all the larger 550 bore, I am assuming it's already the large bore.

I use a 6ft mower and a 7.5ft mower and the power is fine. Years ago i used a 5ft king mower and it pulled harder than the 6 i use now. I would not want to put any more power on the pto clutch and shaft. Is your engine up to speed? One of the problems with the S55 is people burn up the pto clutches.

I pull a 5' Howse that I've pulled the blades off of and sharpened up. I haven't hit any rocks since. I run around 1600 rpm and when it begins to really lug down, I bump it up to 1700 or so, to keep it moving. The PTO works fine. It snaps in alright. I'm guessing from your response that either my engine is weak, or I am mowing tough grass. I like to mow in 3rd gear so it doesn't take all day. My worst hill is maybe 10% grade.
It lugs down and the rpms drop to 1500 or so, and you can tell it's really laboring to keep speed.

The 550's run at 2000 and the service manuels say you can increase the speed of S55 to that speed. This will give you 41hp if you have the large sleeves.

The trouble with increasing speed like that is that the PTO gearing is geared for 1600 rpm to give the 540 pto speed. If you run at 2000, your pto speed goes to 675, and the blade tip speed on my brush hog goes up quite a bit. That's not really safe for extended operation.
Not to mention the fuel consumption increase. It's already very hard on fuel.

The fords all run high pto speeds, and all the mowers are made to work with them. The no load speed on a S55 is 1750 loaded speed is 1625.The service bullitions go into all this and recomend increaseing the engine speed to 2000 if more power is needed.
