I have never heard of a turbo kit offered for the 283 diesel, but I've often fantasized about turboing one. I love the 283 engine, truly one of Oliver's best. I once ran one that would dyno a solid 92 hp with just tweaking the fuel screw on injection pump. Imagine what a turbo would do! The 283 is a tough motor, and I wouldn't hesitate to juice one a little, but keep it reasonable. Of course, the more carried away one gets with turning it up, a reduction in service life would have to be expected vs. the stock power setting.

I would not do it Brad, I have a 1655 with a 283 and I know that mine stock would not stay togeather if I put a turbo on it. If I pull that 283 to a heavy disk too long I start having problems with the engine, and busted head gaskets. I know a turbo would tear my engine apart. If you put a turbo on, rebuild the engine with heavier parts to take the extra horsepower.

I agree that I would not put a turbo kit on a 283. If you really need extra power, put a 310 in it or maybe a Cummins. However, I am surprised that Shep had trouble with the 283. We had one that came from the factory without a keeper on one wrist pin and it ran and ran and ran without any problems. Finaly pulled it down to put an injector in it and found a big scar in number 2 cylinder. That was our big tractor for the longest time and we worked it hard plowing, disking, etc.

As long as I keep light loads to the 1655 it does great, we run that tractor all the time it is so handy. But if you go out and work it hard to a disk or corn chopper the engine comes apart. I just dont think the 283 can stand the heat as well as some of the others. Over the last few years we have gotten some bigger tractors and have not worked the 1655 as hard and it has done better. I still would not turbo one, I would replace the engine with a Cummins if you need more power.

If I remember correctly, there was a company offering kits to covert 1655 and the like to the 4BT3.9 Cummins. Then you would basicly have an American series tractor. However, I don't know if they made a kit to put the 6B5.9 for the smaller tractors. I have to believe that the rear end and such would handle around 100 hp without any problems.

Yeah, I am planning to put a 5.9 Cummins with no turbo in the 1655 this fall. There is a mechenic nearby that has done several like that, and he is going to help me get the parts I need and help me do all the conversions. It doesnt look like it will be to hard to do. This engine should be around 90Hp and should take the hard work a little better. I am just not a big fan of the Waukesha's and am slowly repowering them with the Cummins. My 1855 with the 310 is next after the 1655 gets done. I love the tractors, but the Waukesha engines are fair at best. Just my thoughts.
