1800 Gas PTO Won't Stop

I have an 1800 gas. The PTO does not like to stop. The PTO lever works and engages and disengages the PTO, but the PTO wants to keep running. When hooked to a load like a bush hog, it will slow down when disengaged, but does not want to stop completely. Any ideas would be welcome.

My 1650 has the same problem. It is better after the oil gets warmed up though. The PTO plates like to stick together when the oil is still thick. Make sure your brake pack is working well. It is inside the housing with the PTO clutch discs. They are real easy to get to.

If I'm not mistaken your 1800 is like my 1600. I think they both have a dry clutch w/o a brake. The later tractors have a wet clutch and may have a brake, don't know for sure. I'm having the same problems as you and have pulled the clutch out to inspect it. From phone calls I have made you may get warpage in plates if it was adjusted too tight. Keep in touch and good luck. I had the same with my 1800, PTO wouldn't disenage. I ultimately freed it up by making adjustments through the access plug on the rear of the tractor. The plug is about 3 inches in diameter with a large hex in the center, to the left of the PTO shaft. With the plug removed, rotate the PTO shaft until you can see a pin that locks the adjustment collar. It is spring loaded. Adjustments are made by depressing the pin and rotating the collar. I accomplished this using a metal dowel rod about 18 inches in length to depress the pin and a large long screwdriver to turn the collar. Unfortunately, I can't recall which way (clockwise or counter clockwise) to turn the collar to tighten or loosen the pto clutch. Unless someone else out there can help me out with that one, alittle experimentation my be required. You may be able to figure it out by pulling the PTO engage lever while observing what happens in the housing. Sorry I can't be of more assistance.
